There are many reasons for this, and one of them is historical. The man who started the first coffee shop in Vienna was actually born in the Lviv region. And guess what? Local cafés in Lviv are now bringing the story full circle!
So, when the Turkish army besieged Vienna in 1683, this guy named Yuriy Frants Kulchytsky, a nobleman of Ukrainian descent in the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth, snuck past the Turkish lines and notified the allies that Vienna urgently needed help.
Kulchytsky was rewarded for his heroic role in the battle and got permission to use the coffee beans the retreating Turkish troops left behind to open Vienna's first coffee shop. It took a bit for Europeans to get used to the unusual coffee taste and even more time for coffee culture to reach Lviv, but once the locals tried coffee, they couldn't get enough of it.
There are countless places in Lviv offering various coffee drinks, but we made a short list of places we recommend visiting to sample local coffee flavors and learn about traditions.
