Explore Freedom Avenue’s history and architecture at your own pace.

Freedom Avenue, or Prospekt Svobody in Ukrainian, is one of Lviv’s most beautiful and trendiest streets. This avenue seems to have it all: architectural wonders, including a magnificent Neo-Renaissance opera house, museums, and several monuments; fashionable restaurants and fast-food joints; and, of course, a wide, beautiful boulevard. During festivals and holidays, you will see many kiosks selling all sorts of interesting crafts, food, and souvenirs, and a stage is often set up here for various public events. The street has its own special atmosphere and is popular with locals and tourists year-round.
It’s hard to imagine that just over a century ago the Poltva River flowed right here where you stand. In medieval times, the river was a lifeline for security, commerce, and trade. The Poltva served as a natural border for the city, with defensive walls and ramparts built along the left bank, now the even-numbered side of Freedom Avenue. Ships would ply the river, bringing loads of goods from as far as the Baltic Sea.

Take this audio tour to hear interesting stories about the famous theater and other attractions on and near the street.
